Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck Retires After Seven Seasons

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck has officially hung up his cleats after seven seasons. He is retiring because of lingering injuries that have plagued him for the last four years. In his words, “It’s been four years of this pain to healthy and pain to healthy and pain to healthy again and I’m choosing to step away because I need to recover.”

Shocking Announcement

Let’s just say this came as a complete shock to NFL fans everywhere. He’s a top ten quarterback, he was the Colts franchise player, and now he’s gone. As for who will step into his place, it will undoubtedly be QB Jacoby Brissett, who was a former member of the Patriots backup QB carousel. Brissett stepped in for Andrew Luck when he had his shoulder injury in 2017. Luck was admired for being one of the nicest guys in the entire NFL and he is now gone due to injury. He has ruled out returning in the future also, but he has not ruled out becoming an overseeing member of the Colts and being a leader despite not playing. No team has ever had a season derailed like this one, to say the Colts have had the rug pulled out from under them is an understatement. The news broke during the Bears-Colts Week 3 preseason game and the reaction was surprising. They booed him, and in his press conference, Luck said that hurt him. I couldn’t imagine booing someone who revived your franchise, but now they can look to Jacoby Brissett who will work behind one of the best offensive lines in football, and with a good set of receivers. He retired because he was mentally worn down and it’s a crying shame that it had to be this way.

Jacoby Brissett Taking Over

Now that Luck is gone, Jacoby Brissett will take over, as I mentioned earlier. He is no stranger to starting, however, and the Colts have repeatedly stated that he is the best backup in the NFL. Now is his time to shine, and he will have to prove himself to Colts fans and to the rest of the NFL that he is still a capable starter as the Colts pursue an AFC South title. I firmly believe the Colts are still the favorite to win the AFC South because there isn’t a firm second-best team in that division. I honestly believe Jacoby Brissett can become a Pro-Bowler this season. He will take over and do just fine and he will exceed expectations.

Concluding Thoughts

In conclusion, this was one of the most surprising moments in NFL History and it’s truly tragic that a player who stepped in the place of Peyton Manning and did so admirably and was a four-time Pro-Bowler, has his career cut short like this. It’s sad and it’s a testament to what a bad offensive line can do to a quarterback’s health. He is doing what’s best for him and I hope everyone that’s reading this can agree that health is more important than anything in life, including money and fame.
