Heller: 10 things I learned from Week 3

Here are 10 observations from Week 3 of the 2019 NFL season.

Taylor Lewan can’t come back soon enough. The Tennessee Titans’ offensive line had a horrible showing against their division rival Jaguars. Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota was sacked nine times on Thursday night. Lewan has one more game left on his four-game suspension.

The good, the bad, and the ugly. One of the biggest stories entering Week 3 was the Giants’ benching of two-time Super Bowl champion, Eli Manning. Sixth overall pick Daniel Jones made his first career start on the road in Tampa Bay. Jones looked like a veteran, displaying great pocket presence and awareness. The offense was really clicking. Star running back Saquon Barkley suffered an injury to his ankle. He would return to the sideline but on crutches and a walking boot. Jones ran in from eight yards out to give the Giants the lead and the win with under a minute to play in the game.

There were some big shoes to be filled. Mason Rudolph (Steelers), Teddy Bridgewater (Saints), and Kyle Allen (Panthers) all made starts for their respective teams. All three played well, and Rudolph was the only one to come out on the losing end.

3-0, what else is new? It’s not a surprise to many that the Chiefs, Patriots, Packers, Cowboys, and Rams are undefeated through three games.

3-Oh really? The Bills are 3-0. Yes, the Buffalo Bills (although the Bengals didn’t make it easy). And the 49ers held off the Steelers to improve to 3-0, as well.

Did you hear that roar? With an impressive complete team win against the Eagles in Philadelphia, the Lions are another team that is undefeated. They are 2-0-1 after tying with the Cardinals in Week 1.

The game of the week didn’t disappoint. The Ravens and Chiefs matchup had all the hype all week. Patrick Mahomes didn’t disappoint, throwing for 374 yards and three touchdowns. Lamar Jackson struggled just enough to come out on the losing end, only scoring one touchdown on the ground. But a three-touchdown performance by running back Mark Ingram helped keep the Ravens in the game.

Thanks for staying. Veteran kicker Adam Vinatieri struggled the first two weeks, so much so that he was contemplating retirement this past week. He ended up going two-for-two on field goals, including a 49-yarder, and three-for-three on extra points.

Back to form. Vikings running back Dalvin Cook’s injuries appear to be behind him. He had his third straigh100-yardrd rushing game to start the season.

More than just Luck. Many thought that the Indianapolis Colts would suffer to some extent when Andrew Luck announced his retirement weeks before the start of the regular season. But Jacoby Brissett has performed exceptionally well. Aided by the success of running back Marlon Mack, this team is playing good football.

Week 3 of the NFL season is officially in the books. We’re on to Week 4, where the game of the week is going to be the Patriots and Bills playing for sole possession of first place in the AFC East.
