Green Bay Packers vs. Kansas City Chiefs: Recap and Highlights

The Green Bay Packers faced the Kansas City Chiefs on Oct. 27, 2019, in Week 8 of the 2019 NFL season. Here are highlights from the game.

Instead of a quarterback duel, fans were treated to a game of back-and-forth between the Packers and the Chiefs. The Chiefs showed that they can be competitive despite not having Patrick Mahomes at the helm, but the Chiefs’ defense wasn’t able to keep up with Aaron Rodgers and the Packers’ offense.

The first quarter belonged to the packers as they racked up two touchdowns, courtesy of both Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams, to make it 14-0. In the second quarter, the Chiefs responded by racking up 17 unanswered points. Travis Kelce and Mecole Hardman were able to make it into the end zone after receiving passes from Matt Moore, and Harrison Butker was able to contribute a field goal.

From then on, it was back and forth between the teams, with the only points in the third quarter coming from the Packers via a field goal. During the fourth quarter, Williams racked up another touchdown on a pass from Rodgers. The Chiefs responded with a rushing touchdown from Damien Williams, which tied the game at 24.

Rodgers and the Packers’ offense came right back after getting the ball back and put up seven more points thanks to a touchdown by Aaron Jones. The Packers took the lead and never gave it back to the Chiefs.

The Chiefs were unable to convert on the ensuing possession and punted back to the Packers. Once they got the ball back, they maintained possession until the end, handing the Chiefs their third loss of the season.

The numbers put up in the passing game by both Rodgers and Moore are similar on paper, as Moore was 24-for-36 for 267 yards and Rodgers was 23-for-33 for 305 yards. Despite the unexpected decent performance by Moore, it still wasn’t enough to be able to give the Chiefs’ offense the versatility they would have had with Patrick Mahomes. Combine that with the Chiefs defense’s inability to stymie Rodgers and you end up with the game everyone watched on Sunday night with the Packers emerging victorious.

The turning point in the game came when the Packers were able to take advantage after getting possession at the end of the third quarter on a Chiefs fumble by LeSean McCoy. It gave them the lead and had the Chiefs trying to play catch-up for the rest of the game.

Both teams played well, and Moore definitely played better than people were expecting. In the end, minus the dueling quarterbacks, you might believe that fans did get their money’s worth with the game they were given.
