Franchy Cordero is Showing Improvement in Worcester

Franchy Cordero Finding His Swing

After a slow start to the season, Franchy Cordero has found his swing in Triple-A. The twenty-six-year-old began the season in the majors but hit .179 in 34 games. While scouts have raved about his power, he struggled to get on base and only hit one home run. Since being sent down, however, he has looked like a different player and showed the tools that made him a key piece in the Benintendi deal.

In ten games for Worcester, Cordero is hitting .405. The Dominican native has eight extra-base hits in that span and has driven in nine runs. With the WooSox, he has looked more confident at the plate and in the field. His recent play has been a welcome sign after a tough start to the 2021 season.

Additionally, the power has been on full display in Triple-A. The Red Sox outfielder has hit four home runs, including one of the longest in the minors this season. With Worcester, he has hit primarily out of the three-hole and been a steady contributor. His recent play has also caught the attention of Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom.

“As frustrating as it is to live that with him when he was struggling up in the big-leagues, it also speaks to the value of making sure that we’re turning over every rock developmentally to get him right. He’s young enough and talented enough that we owe it to him — we owe it to ourselves — to do everything we can to get him on a good track,” -Chaim Bloom

Expectations for the Remainder of the Season

As the season continues, Cordero will be a name to watch in the minors. He has shown the power that scouts have raved about and is making the most of his time in Worcester. While it is unknown when he will be recalled, Cordero’s recent play has been hard to ignore. In the last two weeks, he has been able to get on base while receiving consistent playing time.

Over Cordero’s last four games, he has nine hits in 18 at bats. He has struck out just once and showed an improved approach at the plate during that stretch. As Cordero looks to make it back to the majors, how he cuts down on strikeouts will significantly impact his success. Despite a disappointing start to the season, the former top prospect is showing that there is more to his game.
