Flashback, May 26: United Fans Rejoice

20 years ago to this day, on May 26, 1999, Manchester United completed a comeback for the ages in Barcelona to defeat Bayern Munich in the Champions League final; helping the former earn the Treble (Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions league.)

The super-sub legends of United: Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer struck back-to-back daggers during injury time to leave a hole in the hearts of Bayern Munich’s supporters. The latter of the Red Devil’s bench pairings is currently the coach for Manchester United. But on this Sunday, May the 26th, he was back out on the field with his former teammates, such as David Beckham, Peter Schmeichel, Gary Neville, Andy Cole, and Dwight Yorke to celebrate their win. Back in the dugout was the legendary manager, Sir Alex Ferguson for the Red Devils.

Solskjaer got things going by opening the scoring within the first four minutes. The United legends outplayed the Bayern legends and served a thrilling amount of goals with the final score of 5-0. Old Trafford was booming with the delight and fans welcomed the warm embrace of nostalgia from the 99’ Treble year.

A Manchester United writer, Rich Fay, tweeted, “The worrying thing is that David Beckham and Gary Neville genuinely look better than any of United’s current right wing options.”

Even the Manchester United Boss, Solksjaer, mingled with the idea of starting Jaap Stam and Ronny Johnsen for his current side. Was he joking? Maybe. Or maybe not.

He told BT Sports, when asked about which players impressed him, “Jaap and Ronny…We could do with them two at the back!”

There was some truth that resonated from the 46-year-old Norwegian.

Bring Beckham’s bending shots back to Old Trafford. Gary Neville’s brilliancy in the middle of the pitch. Solskjaer’s decisiveness up top, and Manchester United will return to glory once more. The nail in the coffin for United fans, is, however, that when a treble winning season from two decades ago is the highlight of your 2019 campaign, then, quite frankly, a Red Devils supporter is wallowing remorsefully in the past.
