Five Potential 2023 NFL Head Coach Candidates

NFL

There are plenty of assistant coaches that will be looked at throughout the entirety of the season for possible head coaching jobs. However, only a select few of them will get that opportunity. In the last few years, the NFL has seen many teams trying to find the next offensive genius like Sean McVay or Kyle Shanahan. There are many things that teams look at when analyzing who their next head coach should be, but one of the most important traits is the ability to lead. The following coaches have shown the ability to lead and may be in store for a head coaching position after the 2022 season.

Make sure to check out all of our NFL Draft Recaps.

Rich Bisaccia, Green Bay Packers

Bisaccia is a coach that has been around the league for quite some time. He has climbed the ladder and at one point this past season was the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders. His leadership qualities were shown throughout his interim position with the team, and many believed he would get a contract offer to remain the coach of the team. However, the Packers jumped at the chance to bring him on to revamp their special teams. Bisaccia is a players-coach, a motivator, and a guy who leads by example. Don’t be surprised if another team gives him a look after this upcoming season if the Packers’ special teams show great signs of improvement.

Ken Dorsey, Buffalo Bills

Earlier this offseason the New York Giants swooped in and took Brian Daboll from the Bills allowing Dorsey to slide in as the new offensive coordinator for Buffalo. Dorsey will have plenty of chances to get looks as he will now get to have one-on-one time with Josh Allen. Dorsey is a younger guy, only 41 years old, and was a quarterback himself. He understands what it takes to create a fundamentally sound offense and many teams looking at him for the 2023 season will get to see that first-hand this year.

Mike Kafka, New York Giants

Kafka is similar to the stature of Dorsey, although younger, he will be getting looks after this upcoming season. A few years ago, the NFL saw the Chicago Bears chase after Matt Nagy, who at the time was with the Kansas City Chiefs. Kafka is now getting similar looks to what Nagy was getting, but teams may be more cautious this time. Taking a risk on a young offensive-minded guy may not always pan out, but it’s a risk many teams feel they have to take when they are trying to develop a young quarterback. Kafka can be that guy in 2023 or 2024, especially if he can turn around the New York offense.

Eric Bieniemy, Kansas City Chiefs

Bieniemy is a name that has made a list similar to this for the last few seasons, but nothing has come of it. His name has been brought up for many teams who needed new head coaches, but teams always seem to pass and find a different option. It’s head-scratching considering what Bieniemy has been able to do with the talented Patrick Mahomes and Chiefs offense. If he does not get looks after the 2022 season, then his head coaching chances may continue to reduce year by year. However, this is a guy to keep on the radar as a team may finally decide that 2023 is the time to grab him.

Sean Payton, FOX

Not many people would expect to see Payton on this list considering all he did for the New Orleans Saints while he was the coach there. Many league executives and even fans around the league believe that Payton will take the year off and then return to the NFL, barring the right situation arises. Payton is a football genius and many teams would risk it all to bring him on as their head coach. Don’t be shocked if Payton decides to make a return to football after sitting for one year, and that return will come with a hefty contract too.
