“Fitzmagic” Headed to Miami

Ryan Fitzpatrick is signing a deal with the Miami Dolphins, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Fitzpatrick will sign with Miami with the chance to become a reasonable replacement for Ryan Tannehill, who was traded to the Titans last week. Signing the 36-year-old veteran will not silence speculation that the Dolphins could take a quarterback with the 13th overall pick, or even trade up to an even earlier spot in the first round.

Last year, Fitzpatrick was in and out of the starting role for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He would step in when Jameis Winston was injured or when he was benched. Sometimes the veteran quarterback would be an unlikely hero on the football field, leading fans to nickname him “Fitzmagic”.

He played in eight of the Bucs’ games last season, completing 66.7 percent of his passes, throwing for 2,366 yards, along with 17 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. This will be Fitzpatrick’s eighth team in 15 seasons, as he previously played for the Bengals, Bills, Buccaneers, Jets, Rams, Texans, Titans, and now, the Dolphins.

Because of his age, Fitzpatrick will not be considered the “future” of the Miami Dolphins. The signing means, though, that the rumor of Colin Kaepernick’s interest in signing with the team will not come true. Overall, Fitzpatrick brings a valuable veteran presence to the team that could help develop a younger quarterback when the time comes. It will be interesting to see what his role will be on the team when training camp comes this summer.
