Fister Figuring It out on the Bump for Red Sox

Doug Fister was claimed off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels by the Boston Red Sox on June 23 to add some much-needed depth to the rotation.

At first, it seemed like a failed experiment.

His first seven appearances as a member of the Red Sox were not pretty, to say the least. Fister’s first four starts did not go as planned. The right-handed went 0-4 with a 5.67 ERA.

He was even worse out of the bullpen in three outings – posting an ERA of 7.11.

But a resurgence of Fister has occurred and made him a strong force as of late. Over three of his last four starts, he tossed a combined 23 innings while yielding a total of just six runs. That’s 2.34 runs per nine innings.

While in those three games, he averaged 7.2 innings an outing.

One of those was a complete game, one-hitter against the Cleveland Indians this Tuesday.

The one hit and run that came in the game was via a leadoff home run by Francisco Lindor. Other than that, the 33-year-old mowed down the Tribe lineup – retiring 27 of the next 28 batters en route to a 9-1 win.

Fister is set to return to the bump Sunday at 1:35 p.m. as he opposes Baltimore Orioles right-hander Chris Tillman.
