Examining the Oakland Raiders Busy Start to Free Agency

With money to play with this offseason, the Oakland Raiders have already started to break the bank this off-season

The Oakland Raiders off-season started with a boom by trading for Antonio Brown.

This was just the beginning; as the Raiders started the legal tampering period of free agency with two significant additions.  Oakland added left tackle Trent Brown and safety, LaMarcus Joyner. Both moves are upgrades to the Raiders depth chart at the two respective positions.

Let’s dig deeper into the two newest Raiders.

Trent Brown

Left Tackle Trent Brown is set to sign a four-year $66 million with $36.75 guaranteed.

This deal makes Brown the Highest paid tackle in the league.

Brown played 16 games with the New England Patriots last season and helped them win a Super Bowl.

The Raiders gave up 52 sacks last season, as Derek Carr was always under pressure. Brown will help relieve some of that pressure at left tackle. Signing Brown moves last year’s first-round pick Kolton Miller over to right tackle.

The Raiders need to make sure Carr is protected and signing Brown is a step in the right direction.

LaMarcus Joyner

The second big move Monday by the Raiders was the addition of LaMarcus Joyner.

He will also sign a four-year deal.

Joyner is a versatile player, as he can play safety and cornerback.

In addition, he can support the run as well as roam the middle of the field.

Joyner had 78 tackles and one interception with the Rams last year.

The 5’8 safety brings some much need to speed to a Raiders secondary that lacks speed.

Joyner should have a big year with the Raiders defense; Defensive coordinator Paul Guenther will use his new safety in many different ways and allow him to make plays.

Day one went well for the Raiders, but more moves are on the horizon.

The team still lacks talent and has more money to spend.

Detroit Lions Week 9 Recap- Gruden, Carr Raid Lions

The Lions traveled to Oakland in their last season at the Colosseum. The plan was to use an Air-Raid offense (like Arizona’s) to sink the Raiders’ ship in the Black Hole for one last time. Instead, Jon Gruden utilized Derek Carr to do exactly what Matthew Stafford was supposed to do- raid the secondary and win the game.
