On July 14, Boston Red Sox fans everywhere heard the three words they wanted to hear in regards to third baseman, Pablo Sandoval.
Those were “designated for assignment”. Five days thereafter, he was officially released from his duties in Boston, whih will owe him roughly $40 million through 2020.
Only three days after the official release, the team that Sandoval found all of his successes with, the San Francisco Giants, signed him to a minor-league contract and assigned him to the San Jose Giants, a Class-A Advanced affiliate.
While playing in San Jose for three days, he registered a total of 11 plate appearances with two hits and two walks. That was enough for him to be promoted to the Triple-A farm squad, Sacramento River Cats.
He played three-times as many games there as he did back in San Jose. His batting average slightly dropped while in Sacramento as he got six hits in 29 at-bats. One of those hits was a double, and another was a home run.
Those two extra-base hits provided enough evidence to the Giants front office that he was ready to return to the MLB.
However, he has not been performing to the quality at which the club has been hoping for of him, at least we don’t think.
In his 28 games so far, he hasn’t put up good stats.
In 109 plate appearances, he has reached base 25 times, 19 have come via a hit and six from a free pass. His average is at .188 and his on-base percentage stands at .248, while the Giants sit in last.
Now hold your laughter, it gets even better!
In his last 10 games played, he has gotten on base four times, all walks. Zero hits. The Panda is 0 for his 35.
This is not even a slump for him either. He has not recorded a single season with a batting average above .280 since 2012 for the Giants. He was voted an All-Star that year.
