Earl Thomas Rumors: No Hometown Discount Could Lead to 49ers’ Version of Legion of Boom

Ever since Earl Thomas made his famous “come get me” line to Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett, the organization has been preparing to purport a backfield with No. 29 leading the way.

However, as the NFL Scouting Combine began its first few days of trials, a report hit the Twitter-verse and broke the collective Cowboys-verse saying that Thomas would not give a discount to his hometown of Dallas during free agency.

Boom.

There’s simply no way the Cowboys can afford the sort of collateral it would take to retain their current bevy of stars, plus an Earl Thomas. Somewhere in the distance, John Lynch is known to be sporting a smirk, as Richard Sherman spreads his arms wide like he’s covering Michael Crabtree, beckoning for Thomas to join the Red and Gold fold.

Thomas will most likely be a 49er within the first few days of free agency if an unofficial agreement is not already agreed upon in the days prior. This changes the 49ers’ backfield into an immediate problem for opposing offenses. Before his injury, Thomas was the highest rated player in the league, per Pro Football Focus’s grading system.

The 49ers have been void of any open field enforcer of the caliber of Earl Thomas since Dashon Goldson, and even that doesn’t equate to Thomas’s prowess. It’s going to be fun watching the quasi “Legion of Boom” shift to San Francisco and hold down the 49ers’ defensive backfield for the next couple years.

One can only hope they come close to replicating the same success.
