Draw Versus Hungary Applies Pressure to France

Les Bleus could have very well secured their spot in the knockout stage. Unfortunately, the failure to pick up the win against Hungary puts that on hold. While it’s not over for France, there is a lot of pressure. The winner of the group is to be decided on Wednesday, and between France, Germany, and Portugal, it could be any of them.

France is fortunate to still be on top of the group with four points. However, with Germany and Portugal banging on the door at three points each, France has a major task on Wednesday. Les Bleus has to avoid a loss at all costs. A win or draw will allow them to advance to the knockout stage, but they need a victory. Les Bleus must defeat Portugal and win the group in order to enter the knockouts with confidence and motivation.

Portugal suffered a 4-2 loss to Germany on Saturday. The Germans excelled at inflicting pressure on the Portuguese side. Portugal’s defense did not look good and Germany took full advantage. The question is, can France do the same? Will the French attack successfully penetrate through Portugal’s defense and score some goals? Can the defense play as well as they did against Germany in the opening game? Can they inflict heavy pressure on Portugal and take advantage? While all that remains to be seen, France can very well do all of that. However, it is up to them to dig deep and find ways to accomplish these goals.

The French attack only has one goal so far courtesy of Antoine Griezmann. The connection between Karim Benzema and Kylian Mbappé has yet to produce anything of note. Finding the back of the net is what’s most important for France. The defense will have to do its job, but so does the offensive attack. A well-balanced team is a key to victory.

At this point, there’s no more room for error and it’s time for Les Bleus to play sublime soccer. In other words, they need to prove why they are the favorites to win Euro 2020.
