Dr. Sullivan’s NFL Week 6 Medical Report

Dr. Sullivan's NFL Week 6 Medical Report Joe Mixon

Week 6 of the NFL season was a little better for teams than previous weeks have been. Here are my reports on some of the key injuries from last week.

Joe Mixon, RB, Cincinnati Bengals

Mixon suffered a foot injury in the Bengals game against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. The Bengals have given very little information on the injury. Given the fact he left the game to be evaluated and was allowed to return to finish the game is a good thing. There are three likely things when you hear “foot injury”. These are a Jones fracture, turf toe, and a foot sprain or Lis Franc injury. Since he returned to the game a fracture can be ruled out most likely. That means foot sprain is most likely injury and a mild sprain is a one to three week recovery time.

Myles Jack, LB, Jacksonville Jaguars

Jack aggravated an ankle injury originally suffered in Week 4. As with any soft tissue injury, returning before being fully healed increases the risk for further injury. Jack did not practice Wednesday, and I suspect he will be a game-time decision. He most likely suffered a Grade 2 Sprain initially and at best just reaggravated that injury, though he could have suffered a further injury as well. I don’t expect he will play Sunday, but we will see when the inactive list comes out before the game.

Jonnu Smith, TE, Tennessee Titans

Smith suffered a mild ankle sprain in Week 6. He left the game, was retaped, and ran sprints on the sideline but did not return to the game. Smith was a limited participant in practice on Wednesday. He will most likely be a game-time decision on Sunday. As with all ankle sprains, controlling pain and swelling is the hallmark of treatment. Once those two things are controlled, he can return to the field.

Devin Bush, LB, Pittsburgh Steelers

Bush’s 2020 season is done after he suffered a torn ACL in the Steelers’ win over the Browns on Sunday. He will undergo surgery to repair the torn ligament and will then face six to nine months of physical therapy before he is able to return to the field. That timeline means he should be back by training camp next summer.

Keenan Allen, WR, Los Angeles Chargers

Allen left Sunday’s game with a back spasm and was a limited participant in practice Wednesday. How he responds to treatment this week will determine his status for this Sunday’s game. Recovery time from a simple back spasm is usually a few days to a few weeks depending on the severity of the spasm. The fact that he was able to practice on a limited basis is a good sign for his status this weekend.
