Don’t Rule out a Bartolo Colon Comeback

Bartolo Colon: one of the most likable and fun players to watch in the modern game of baseball.

The unlikely success that he mastered for someone his size is unmatched and his character is golden. At 46 almost 47, Bartolo Colon seems like an ageless wonder. Having not played a major league game since 2018, the chances of a comeback are slowly slipping away but have no doubt, Bartolo is putting in the work for a comeback. Many videos have leaked from Hector Gomez of Colon working out or throwing bullpens back in the Dominican Republic.

The 46-year-old actually looks like he is in better shape than he may have when last in the major leagues. A few months ago, his Instagram page was discovered and he announced that he is writing a book called “Big Sexy” about himself and his experiences.

That was the start of his new character on social media in what may very well be his retired career. The former Mets fan favorite doesn’t view it as that. Over the offseason, Colon has made sure that he has been keeping up with the youth in the game by playing pickup games with aspiring prospects and absolutely dominating. Many videos have been released of him playing with random people in the Dominican Republic and just enjoying himself. He still loves the game no matter what uniform he is wearing or what soil he is on. That is a special trait that Bartolo has that no one can take away from him.

The real question is would that 85 mile-per-hour fastball play in today’s age? Don’t count out Bartolo but I bet not. With all the high velocity in the “new game,” Colon would have to master the craft of pitching slowly through the available analytics

Over his career, he has a 247-188 record with a 4.12 ERA, 2,535 strikeouts, in 3,461.2 innings and 565 games. He also has his famous homer against James Shields back in 2017 that sent the sports world into a frenzy

Whether Bartolo can reciprocate any of his previous success remains to be seen but he surely has amassed some hefty achievements including being a four-time All-Star and the 2005 Cy Young. In that same 2005 season. Colon also amassed 21 wins, which was the league leaders that year.

It is unlikely that a team would give him a guaranteed deal, but it is well worth a flier as the veteran leadership and knowledge that Bartolo has is unmatched by anyone in today’s game.
