Dodgers Bring in Danny Duffy

Long-time Kansas City Royals starting pitcher Danny Duffy is headed west. The Los Angeles Dodgers have acquired the injured southpaw and cash in exchange for players to be named later.

Duffy has been around Kansas City for a while. So long, in fact, that he had 10-and-5 rights. For those unfamiliar with the rule, any player who has been in the league for ten years, the last of which for the same team, can veto any trade. However, it looks like Duffy will go to Los Angeles to contend for his second World Series title, after 2015. He has had a renaissance season thus far, with a 2.51 ERA through 13 outings. The last time his ERA was even under 4.00 was in 2017, at 3.81.

A left flexor strain has forced Duffy to the injured list as of now, but Royals General Manager Dayton Moore indicated two days ago that he could return in 3-4 weeks. Upon his arrival, Duffy could be a fifth starter, although he is certainly not the Trevor Bauer replacement that the Dodgers could be looking for after the right-hander’s legal troubles this year.

Duffy also comes with playoff experience. While he has never made a postseason start, he has 14 strikeouts in 10.2 innings over nine outings. The Royals do lose one of their last remaining players from the 2015 winning team. Now, only Salvador Perez has been on the club since the victory. Relievers Greg Holland and Wade Davis both left the team but have since returned. Unfortunately for them, Duffy’s injury likely cost them a better quality of prospects. Royals fans will have to wait and see what the return is for a little longer.

In order to make room for Duffy on the 40-man roster, the Dodgers designated outfielder DJ Peters for assignment.
