Wide receiver isn’t a position the Kansas City Chiefs absolutely need to address this offseason, but rumors have swirled that the team may be looking to add one more weapon at Wideout.
The Kansas City Chiefs find themselves in a weird situation talking about their wide receiver position this offseason.
Kansas City has one of the most explosive offenses in the NFL thanks to 2018 MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his magic trio of targets Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce, and Sammy Watkins.
However, at the same time, the Kansas City Chiefs are still in the dark regarding Hill and his possible off the field issues.
Let’s remind ourselves that Hill is presumed innocent until proven otherwise, and for now, he has not been charged with a crime. However, the Chiefs star receiver is currently under investigation for two alleged incidents at his home in Overland Park Kansas, involving him and his fiancé in a police report for a case of child abuse or neglect.
“We’ve been provided information, and the clarity and the details, I think, are still being worked through,” general manager Brett Veach told the Kansas City Star regarding Hill’s situation. “We’re just waiting to see what’s real and what’s not. When we get that, we’ll be able to sit down as a staff and go through all the information and go from there.”
In addition to a potential Hill suspension, the Chiefs lost receiver Chris Conley this offseason when he signed with the Jaguars.
Kansas City did add Sammie Coates, a former third-round selection of the Steelers out of Auburn, but he has yet to prove he can make much of an impact on the NFL stage.
Thus, it would not be surprising to see the Chiefs add one more wide receiver.
When asked about possibly drafting a receiver in the upcoming NFL Draft Veach said this to the Kansas City Star. “You’re always going to look to add talent. If a guy is there where we’re picking [in the draft] and if he’s the highest-rated player on the board, and the talent meets the value, then you go in that direction. If we did pick a receiver early, it may be because it was part of our overall philosophy of roster-building.”
Ultimately, the Chiefs won’t be afraid to add talent at a specific position just because they already have great players in place.
Yet, it wasn’t long ago when the team was struggling to find a number one wide receiver. In 2014, they went the entire season without a touchdown by a wide receiver.
Thus, ended up giving Jeremy Maclin a massive contract (before cutting him two years after) after he failed to become the star wide receiver they were waiting for.
Meanwhile, behind Maclin, Tyreek Hill worked hard to become the player he is today. Presuming Hill is clear to play, he’ll be the Chiefs top receiver along with Sammy Watkins serving as the number two receiver.
Thus, if the Chiefs did decide to draft a receiver, it’d be more likely a fourth or fifth player at wide receiver because Demarcus Robinson has shown he can be a reliable third receiver behind Hill and Watkins in
With that being said, that poses this question: Which receivers in the upcoming draft would be a good fit for the Chiefs?
A few names already popped up in the press, such as Andy Isabella from Massachusetts, who is a good route runner or Mecole Hardman, Georgia, an explosive player who could learn in the shadow of Hill and Watkins and reveal himself to be a good weapon within a few years, just like Tyreek did.
Many questions are surrounding the Chiefs entering the NFL Draft. Some say the pressure will be so high on the Chiefs next year following nearly reaching the Super Bowl that it could put them in danger of a hangover effect.
However, the Chiefs’ front office seems to be very focused on finishing what the team started a year ago. Thus, if they feel the need to get some insurance in the wide receiver position and they can get a good bargain out of it, why not?
