The New York Giants have a new coaching staff in place. Are head coach Joe Judge and company sold on Daniel Jones?
For any first time NFL coach or any coach period, the first priority is familiarizing themselves with their quarterback, and deciding if he’s their guy.
While Daniel Jones showed major upside in his rookie season in New York, in a tough spot after the benching of two-time Super Bowl champion quarterback Eli Manning (the perennial fan favorite), the team’s season went off the rails quickly. But many contribute that, in large part, to the injury of running back Saquon Barkley, who suffered a high ankle sprain and the after-effects through most of the season.
Are they sold on Jones and are willing to patiently let him further develop or would they rather draft another quarterback with their high draft pick in the impending draft, similar to what the Arizona Cardinals decided to do last season with Kyler Murray, which as the season wore on proved to be the right decision? Murray went as far as to win the Offensive Rookie of the Year Award.
While they won’t admit it, Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniels have to be reeling after Tom Brady decided to sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers just this past week.
The rumored replacements have included Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr, Indianapolis Colts quarterback and former Patriot Jacoby Brissett, Cincinnati Bengals signal-caller Andy Dalton, and even retired quarterback and former Colts starter Andrew Luck has been mentioned.
But Jones could be the best under the radar option, given the Giants are willing to listen. In his first season in New York, he took his lumps from opposing defenses as the Giants’ offensive line failed to keep him upright consistently.
Do Belichick and the Patriots agree with the common consensus and believe Jones can be a top tier quarterback in this league? He is still in his “molding stage” which would make him a pretty good fit in New England. Losing a six-time Super Bowl champion quarterback won’t be easy to overcome, but finding a signal-caller that you’re confident in certainly would be the first step in their unofficial rebuild.
Could Judge’s first major move as Giants coach be to “help” his former team, where he was a member of Bill Belichick’s coaching staff?
