The start of training camp is a sign of new beginnings for rookies and players with a new team, along with another year of grit towards the Lombardi trophy. Of course, the injury bug. Teams want to avoid it as much as possible, but a big scare has happened on the first day of padded practice.

Dallas Cowboys’ defensive tackle Gerald McCoy has suffered a torn right quadriceps tendon during the team’s first padded practice Monday afternoon. He will undergo season-ending surgery and miss the 2020 season.

According to ESPN, McCoy was “hurt during individual drills and was unable to put weight on his leg after he was examined by the team’s medical staff.” The Oklahoma product tried to take a few steps unassisted, but could not. An MRI confirmed the injury.

The 32-year old signed a three-year. $18 million deal in free agency after spending one season with the Carolina Panthers.

The Cowboys are rebuilding their defensive line with the signings of Dontari Poe, Aldon Smith, Everson Griffen and McCoy. However, his deal infers that Head Coach Mike McCarthy planned to give him plenty of snaps, something he lacked in Carolina.

Prior to Carolina, McCoy spent his first nine seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after being selected as the third pick in the 2010 NFL Draft.

Until 2021, look for the Cowboys to give more snaps to 2019 second-rounder Trysten Hill and rookie Neville Gallimore to step up in his place.
