Could the NFL and WWE Collide over Rob Gronkowski Drama?

News broke on Tuesday that former New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski had decided to come out of retirement and return to the NFL. Much to the chagrin of Patriots fans, it was also reported that he was joining forces with his former quarterback Tom Brady in Tampa Bay after the Patriots and Buccaneers agreed to a trade for the Pro Bowl tight end.

That move set social media ablaze as everyone from former teammates, football legends, and fans had reactions to the news.

Almost immediately, fans of World Wrestling Entertainment also took to social media. At the WWE’s marquee Wrestlemania event just a few weeks ago, Gronkowski won the 24/7 Championship Belt. The WWE was the latest in many new ventures for Gronkowski since retiring after the Patriots’ 2018 Super Bowl victory. He also joined FOX as an NFL analyst and was a contestant on the popular FOX singing show, The Masked Singer.

According to a statement from WWE, the 24/7 title can be challenged and the current champion must prorve they can defend it upon request.

Could that translate into a WWE superstar “interfering” with a Gronkowski touchdown celebration in an attempt to win the title belt? Ordinarily, the unanimous consensus would be definitely not. But given the current ongoing shutdown of all things sports due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it may be a small compromise between the two entities. It would also get fans of wrestling who aren’t fans and don’t normally watch football to tune in to the NFL.

While it’s unlikely the NFL and commissioner Roger Goodell would allow anything “gimmicky” to infringe on the game, this could make for a rather unique touchdown celebration, to say the least.

Speaking of gimmicky, this sounds like something that is right up WWE chairman Vince McMahon’s wheelhouse. After all, Gronkowski winning the title in the first place was as big a gimmick as you can get to begin with.
