Alex Cora went back to his home of Puerto Rico to give back to his community after the destruction caused by hurricane Maria in September.
Cora flew back alongside Mayor Marty Walsh, Red Sox pitcher Rick Porcello, team president Sam Kennedy and assistant general manager Eddie Romero.
The group brought medical supplies, water filtration systems, food, and all sorts of necessities the damaged island is in desperate need of. Cora was thankful to know how helpful the Red Sox organization was for the cause.
“I am thankful to the Red Sox, who did not hesitate when I suggested a relief trip this offseason,” Cora said. “I am grateful to JetBlue for transporting all the supplies and for the many organizations who made donations.”
Instead of going back to Cora’s hometown of Caguas, Puerto Rico, they decided to go to the capital, San Juan, where they met up with catcher Christian Vasquez and pitcher Chris Sale. Along with living essentials, they brought equipment for the baseball playing youth in Puerto Rico.
Cora could not go home without giving back to his hometown, so he and the Red Sox Organization donated $200,000 to Caguas Mayor William Miranda Marin to help restore power to the city.
