Colorado Rockies Trade Deadline Approach

Colorado Rockies Trade Deadline Approach: Trevor Story and Charlie Blackmon

The Rockies started the season off really strong, going 11-3 and at one point sat in first place in the National League West. Since then the team has gone 5-13 which includes a six-game losing streak.

With the expanded playoffs this season, Colorado has a good chance to see Rocktober in 2020.

Buyers or Sellers?

So, what will the Rockies trade deadline approach entail? General manager Jeff Bridich spoke in a recent interview with the Rockies Radio network and said that the team is preparing for anything:

“I think we’re going to prepare for both sorts of scenarios,” Bridich said. “Because of our great start, we were focused very much on additions leading up to this point now. I think we have to look at everything now based on what’s gone on the last two weeks, so we’re not 100 percent sure which way it’s gonna go.”

If the team decides to make some moves to improve the team, what does Colorado need to do at the trade deadline in order to have a realistic shot in playoffs?

Pitching Help

The bullpen currently ranks eighth in ERA and WHIP. Carlos Estevez has been the most consistent, but that’s about it.

No one has been able to secure the closer spot with six different pitchers recording a save this season. Josh Hader’s name has been rumored, but the Brewers would be asking for a lot. Trevor Rosenthal was a name mentioned, but he’s off the market due to a trade to Colorado’s in-division rival San Diego Padres, but if they want to look in Kansas City for other relievers, Scott Barlow and Josh Staumont are both young relievers who are under team control for a couple more years.

The Struggles From Behind The Plate

The offense, with the exception of Trevor Story, Charlie Blackmon, and Nolan Arenado, has not been consistent. The position specifically that has struggled is catcher. Between Tony Wolters, Drew Butera and Elias Diaz, the position is hitting just .214/0 HR/11 RBI. The Red Sox’s Christian Vazquez or the Seattle Mariners’ Austin Nola could be options. Even every Atlanta Braves backup to Tyler Flowers would be an improvement.
