The regular season has come to a close and the conference champions have been crowned. Thus, there is only one thing left for the college football world to celebrate in 2019, and that is the bowl season. LSU, Ohio State, Clemson, and Oklahoma will be duking it out in the college football playoff, but there are so many other postseason matchups for fans to enjoy. Here are the top studs and duds from all the pre-Christmas bowl games.
Stud: Jaret Patterson
Buffalo’s defense was dominant against Charlotte in the Bahamas Bowl, but it was their run game that ultimately pushed them past the 49ers. Running back Jaret Patterson rushed for 173 yards and a pair of touchdowns. They only completed eight passes, but it didn’t matter because of effective their run game was.
Stud: The Washington Huskies
The Huskies dominated No. 19 Boise State, 38-7, in the Las Vegas Bowl with a fantastic team effort. Overall, this was a very disappointing season for Washington, but they came to play in Cal Peterson’s final game as the team’s head coach.
Stud: Layne Hatcher
Arkansas State quarterback Layne Hatcher has the best passing performance of Bowl season thus far. He led the Red Wolves to victory over Florida International with 393 passing yards and four touchdown passes.
Stud: The Liberty Flames
The biggest upset from the first week of bowl season was Liberty’s victory over Georgia Southern. The flames rode tough defense and a powerful running to claim their first bowl victory in program history.
Dud: Isiah Green
Marshall was utterly crushed by UCF in all three phases of the game, but it was ultimately poor quarterback play that doomed the Thundering Herd. He completed only nine of his 23 passes and tossed two interceptions.
Dud: Utah State’s Defense
The Utah State Aggies and future NFL quarterback Jordan Love were as good as advertised on offense, but their defense didn’t come to play. Kent State lit up Utah State’s defense in the Frisco Bowl, scoring 51 points and putting up 550 yards of offense. The Aggies were simply incapable of getting a stop all day long.
Dud: Central Michigan
The Central Michigan Chippewas didn’t show up for their bowl game against San Diego State. They were blown out by a 48-11 margin and couldn’t seem to do anything right. Their defense got shredded, the offense was mostly anemic, and the result was a blowout.
