If it weren’t for Joe Burrow‘s incredible senior season and glove-like fit with the Cincinnati Bengals, Chase Young might have been the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Instead, the Ohio State pass-rusher fell to the Washington Football Team at No. 2 and became an instant force on defense. His prowess on the field earned him Defensive Rookie of the Year honors on Saturday.
Young, a 22-year-old Maryland native, made 15 starts in his rookie campaign. He finished with 42 tackles, including 10 for loss and 12 on the quarterback, as well as 7.5 sacks. He made his presence felt in the turnover department, too. Young forced four fumbles and recovered three, including one for a score.
Watching Young was a true delight in 2020. He frequently terrorized opposing quarterbacks and helped lead Washington to an NFC East title. The future of Washington football lights bright with Young at its core for several years to come.
Young received 42.5 votes for the award from 50 eligible voters. Carolina Panthers safety Jeremy Chinn (4.5 votes), Baltimore Ravens linebacker Patrick Queen (two), and Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety Antoine Winfield Jr. (one) rounded out the list of finalists.
