The NHL Weekly Roundup: Week 9

The NHL Weekly Roundup is back again as we witnessed another amazing week in the NHL full of big performances, upsets, and sadly… injuries. If you took my advice for games of the week you saw David Perron score a hat trick in a 5-2 St Louis Blues win over the rival Colorado Avalanche. In the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-1 victory over the Calgary Flames, we were treated to seeing Evgeni Malkin score his 400th goal. Finally, the New York Islanders vs. Boston Bruins didn’t disappoint as the match had to be settled with a shootout in which the Islanders took the victory. Now, let’s hit around the rest of the league, here are my three stars of the week.

Raiders vs Chargers: Get the win for Rivers

The penultimate game of the season matches two AFC West rivals against each other. It’s a farewell stadium game, and it could be the last time Philip Rivers faces the Raiders as a Charger. The 6-8 Oakland Raiders had a good start to the season, but four straight losses have quashed their momentum. Jon Gruden’s team is out to ensure they finish the season on a high.

Why Coaches' Conduct Needs To Be Addressed

Recently in the NHL news cycle, it seemed that every other day we would hear new allegations about coaching misconduct. Over the course of what seems like months, but in reality, has only been less than a month since the allegations against former Calgary Flames head coach Bill Peters from his days as the head coach of the Rockford Ice Hogs in the AHL. Soon after those allegations came out, more came out against Peters from his days in Carolina. Now accusations have come against former Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Mike Babcock, Chicago Blackhawks assistant coach Marc Crawford, and former Dallas Stars head coach Jim Montgomery. This is a disturbing trend that needs to end. Here are a few reasons why.

Stefan Noesen Claimed by Sharks

The San Jose Sharks have claimed veteran forward Stefan Noesen off of waivers from the Pittsburgh Penguins. The 26-year old was promoted from the AHL to the Pittsburgh Penguins NHL roster for the Penguins December 4th matchup against the St. Louis Blues. Noesen went on to score in his first appearance for the team where they went on to win 3-0 against the Western Conference leaders. Noesen went on to appear in five more games for Pittsburgh where he went pointless and wasn’t much of a presence before the Penguins decided to place him on waivers.

On the morning of Tuesday, December 10th the Dallas Stars announced the firing of head coach Jim Montgomery. The reason given for this mysterious firing was “unprofessional conduct”. No further details were released on the matter. Montgomery is now the third head coach released within the last month, the first being Mike Babcock in Toronto, and the second being Bill Peters in Calgary.
