Carolina Panthers Select Derrick Brown at No. 7

The Carolina Panthers selected Auburn defensive tackle, Derrick Brown, with the seventh overall pick of the NFL draft on Thursday.

Brown is the sixth player from Auburn that the Panthers have drafted and the second Auburn player they have taken in the first round, according to Alaina Getzenberg of the Charlotte Observer.  In his senior year last season, Brown had 12.5 tackles for loss, four sacks, four pass breakups, two forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries.

That performance earned Brown All-American distinction and first-team All-SEC honors. He was a finalist for the Chuck Bednarik Award, given to the nation’s top defensive player, and the Outland Trophy, which is given to the nation’s top interior lineman.

Brown was also a good student. He won the Senior CLASS Award, which is given to the top student-athlete in the country. In addition to the CLASS Award, he also won the Lott IMPACT Trophy, given to the best defensive player who shows the qualities of integrity, maturity, performance, academics, community, and tenacity.

Brown will be a huge help for the Panthers. The Panthers have lost multiple defensive linemen this offseason. Brown will be a good fit for the Panthers.
