Carolina Panthers fire Marty Hurney

The Carolina Panthers fired general manager Marty Hurney on Monday over philosophical differences.

This is the second time that Hurney has been fired by the Panthers. The first firing was in 2012. Hurney was re-hired by the Panther in 2017 after they fired Dave Gettleman.

“You look at successful organizations, and there’s a certain alignment between the head coach and the GM,” team owner David Tepper said. “To think that you can do that without some sort of alignment is nuts. So to not have a head coach with some input into that is stupid. I don’t want to be stupid, OK?”

Tepper added, “I think sometimes you just need a restart, a refresh. “We did it last year on the coaching side. Maybe you could say it should have been done before on the GM side. Maybe it should have been. I’m sure people may say that, or otherwise, on both sides. I think it’s just time, on both sides, to do that. It just seems like the right time to move forward.”

Tepper wants to hire a general manager that has like-minded processes. Panthers coach Matt Rhule will have a role in the hiring of a new general manager, according to Kevin Patra of NFL.com.

The Atlanta Falcons, Houston Texans, Detroit Lions, and the Jacksonville Jaguars are looking for general managers. The Washington Football Team might be looking for a new general manager too, so Hurney has options where he will go next.

The Panthers are currently 4-10. They haven’t had a winning season since 2017.
