With the start of the NFL’s league year fast approaching it will start off with free agency, the NFL Draft, and the salary cap casualties. The cap causalities are the team’s ways to try and save money against that salary cap and move money around to improve the team. The Bills like ever team have some contracts they may look to get out of to have extra money to spend. Here’s a list of players and how it may impact the team and the cap situations for the upcoming season.
Which ones are most likely?
Charles Clay may be the player that most fans have been ready to move on from since the end of last year. The 29-year-old has been bitten by the injury bug every season since his big free agent contract in 2015. Clay would have a cap hit of $9 million dollars if he remains on the team. However if the Bills elect to cut Clay, they would save $4.5 million. Just keep in mind that if the Bills do move on from Clay that would leave them with one tight end on the roster in Jason Croom.
Vladimir Ducasse was a signing that fans right away did not like. Ducasse has a cap hit of approximately $2.1 million if he remains on the team in 2019. By cutting Ducasse the Bills can save almost all that money with a saving of $2 million. Cutting Ducasse wouldn’t leave much of a void with the roster either since at the end of the year he was in a reserve role.
Which ones are less likely, but still possible?
Patrick DiMarco is a player I think most fans like, he shows leadership and does play a role on special teams. DiMarco is due $2.15 million for the season and if cut the Bills would save $1.15 million.
Chris Ivory was a puzzling contract when the Bills signed him last year. Ivory is a good backup RB to have on the roster but the Bills can get younger and cheaper options. This year Ivory has a cap hit of $2.9 million and by releasing him they can save $2.15 million.
Which ones are not likely?
LeSean McCoy has been a star player his whole career with an exception of last year. Is it possible that McCoy hit the wall that almost every RB over 30 hits or maybe it was the weapons the Bills put on the field so defenses know to key on McCoy? By releasing McCoy, the Bills could save $6.43 million for 2019, and that is a large sum they could use on getting younger at the position.
Trent Murphy made a lot of sense last year for a team need but not the philosophy that head coach Sean McDermott believes player need to be available for the team. Why’s that a problem? Because he missed the full 2017 season. By cutting Murphy the Bills could save roughly $5 million.
