The Milwaukee Brewers finalized a bullpen move ahead of Friday’s trade deadline. The team struck a deal with the Marlins as they acquired reliever John Curtiss in exchange for minor league catcher Payton Henry.

Curtiss, 28, has looked very good in relief this year as he has gone 3-1 with a 2.48 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, and .227 OBA through 35 games (two starts) totaling 40 innings. He continues to limit walks, issuing just nine free passes (which is actually a career-high) in 2021. He’s also struck out a career-high 40 batters. The former sixth-round pick has allowed just two runs over his last 15 outings. He’ll provide Milwaukee with an underrated bullpen arm down the stretch.

Henry, 24, was a sixth-round pick of the Brewers back in 2016. He entered this season having not played beyond High-A but has since appeared at Double- and Triple-A in 2021. Through 49 games between the two levels, he is slashing .297/.372/.390 with 19 RBI, 16 walks, and 49 strikeouts. He also owns a .398 BABIP and should have an immediate role in the Marlins’ farm system.

At the end of the day, this is a deal that works great for both sides. Milwaukee gets a key reliever who has posted impressive numbers over the past two seasons and is under control through 2025. Meanwhile, the Marlins get someone who is four years younger and has displayed a loud performance at the plate this year.
