Breaking: Saints Sign Wil Lutz to Largest Kicker Contract in History

The New Orleans Saints and talented kicker Wil Lutz have reached an agreement on the largest contract of any kicker in NFL history: a five-year deal that exceeds $20 million in total, a source says. However, I am told that the average annual value does not surpass the all-time record for a kicker, which is a $4.971 million benchmark set by Robbie Gould.

Lutz, 24, has posted terrific numbers through three seasons in the NFL, all of them with the Saints. Through those three campaigns, he has hit 87 of his 100 field goals and 148 of his 153 extra points. Lutz was a 2016 NFL All-Rookie Team selection, in addition to being a two-time NFC Special Teams Player of the Week in 2016 and a one-time NFC Special Teams Player of the Month in 2018.

Lutz went undrafted out of Georgia State in 2016 before being signed by the Ravens. He was later cut, and he latched on with the Saints, who saw his immediate impact when he appeared in games just days after being signed.

Ahead of the official start to the new league year, the Saints accomplished an important task sooner rather than later by hammering out a deal with Lutz to keep him in New Orleans through 2023.
