After splitting the first two games of the series, the Atlanta Braves returned with a vengeance on Sunday and calmed any worries that existed after they were shut out on Opening Day. The Braves totaled 17 hits en route to 14 runs against the New York Mets on Sunday evening.
Every Braves starter had at least one hit, with Ozzie Albies, Dansby Swanson and William Contreras all getting three hits apiece.
The aerial assault began slowly with two RBI singles by Matt Adams and Dansby Swanson in the first inning, but the third inning is when the Braves truly took off.
Three RBI doubles in the third inning by Marcell Ozuna, Swanson, and Ender Inciarte gave the Braves a 7-1 lead and the slugging squad never looked back.
Swanson, Ozuna, Albies, and Austin Riley would add home runs in a 14-1 rout that had virtual Mets fans leaving Citi Field early.
Rick Porcello and Corey Oswalt took the majority of the pain for the Mets on Sunday, giving up six and five earned runs, respectively.
For the Braves, Sean Newcomb and Jhoulys Chacin combined for seven innings of one-run ball to allow for limited use of the Braves’ bullpen after an extra-inning affair the night before.
The Braves head to Tampa Bay on Monday with Mike Foltynewicz. facing off against Tyler Glasnow for a 6:40 p.m. ET start.
The New York Mets look to rebound against the 1-2 Boston Red Sox on Monday. Michael Wacha will look to prove his worth to the Mets with Noah Syndergaard and Marcus Stroman out of commission. Josh Osich will be the Red Sox’ starting pitcher in a 7:35 p.m. ET start.
