New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady weighed in on Andrew Luck’s sudden retirement.
This morning on “The Greg Hill Show” on WEEI, the six-time Super Bowl champion commended Luck on a great career.
“It’s his life and everyone has the right to choose what they want to do,” Brady said on the show. “He had a great career and he was a great player.”
Brady empathized with the Stanford alum and the unlucky spell of injuries he had to deal with.
“Everybody wishes they can be healthy all the time,” Brady said. “It’s a contact sport, he’s certainly had his fair share of injuries.”
It has now been 48 hours since Luck announced his retirement and Brady in his long career said it is not surprising for players to retire this close to the season.
“Guys retire at different times, some at the end of the season and I’ve seen a lot of guys retire before the season gets going,” Brady said. “This is just one of those examples.”
The Michigan alum has not outlasted two Colts franchise quarterbacks in Peyton Manning and Luck. When asked about his longevity and playing into his 40’s, Brady says it is not just the physical or mental aspects of the game. It is both and more.
“There is definitely a physical element, an emotional element, there’s a mental element,” Brady said. “Everything really needs to come together to be the best version of yourself as a player and it takes a lot of support.”
Whenever he needs to lean on them, his teammates, inner circle, and TB12 compatriot Alex Guerrero are always there.
“I have the support of my teammates, my coaches, my family, my friends, of Alex with my training system,” Brady said. “All these things need to really come together in order to continue to achieve so it feels great when you have that support.”
A football campaign takes endurance and Brady says nobody can do it alone.
“The football season is like a marathon and there’s moments where it’s very challenging whether it be physically, emotionally or mentally,” Brady said. “You need somebody to help you push through the hard parts because it’s not all easy, it’s a great challenge, but it’s very rewarding when you meet the challenge too.”
