Boomer Esiason ‘Disgusted’ With Tom Brady

Former Cincinnati Bengals and New York Jets quarterback Boomer Esiason is voicing disapproval of Tom Brady’s next business venture.

During his show on WFAN, the four-time All-Pro commented on Brady’s decision to purchase two trademarks for the nickname “Tom Terrific.”

“I am disgusted, and I’m really surprised, and I’m really — I don’t know, it just feels sleazy to me,” Esiason told listeners. “There are very few things that I get wrapped up in. I got wrapped up in this. There’s nothing I can do about it. All I can do is talk about it and hopefully shame him into not going after it and recognizing a true great of another sport that had the name and was given the name well before he was ever given the name.”

That other great Esiason is talking about is New York Mets Pitcher Tom Seaver. Winner of three Cy Young Awards as well as 12-time All-Star, Seaver has been inducted into the Cincinnati Reds and Mets Hall of Fames. The 1969 World Series champion was enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1982.

Esiason put Brady’s finances on notice saying that he does not need to build a brand off of the name and was still not his to begin with.

“When you’ve got so much [expletive] money, you can do whatever you want, and this is now what Tom Brady wants to take: ‘Tom Terrific’ as his nickname,” Esiason said to listeners. “Maybe in New England they call him that, I guess. But you know what? We’ve been calling Tom Seaver ‘Tom Terrific’ forever, for as long as I can remember, for 50 years. That’s who ‘Tom Terrific’ has always been.”

Esiason is not the only one who has come out against it. Two 1969 Mets Ed Kranepool and Art Shamsky sided with their teammate in an interview with USA Today.

“He’s the greatest quarterback who ever lived and I supported him over the years, and any time I’m rooting in football I’m rooting for Tom Brady,” Kranepool told USA Today. “But when you ask me about Tom Terrific and having played behind a guy like [Seaver], there’s only one guy who can be called Tom Terrific and that’s him. But when you’re first in line, I think there should only be one of any kind. [Brady] is the second model.”

  3. I have NEVER been a fan of Bommer, as he always leads with his mouth. I also think there is wisdom in Mel Globus’s words: “Let your efforts describe your reputation”. “Let your destiny describe your accomplishment”.
