New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick took to the podium for his weekly press conference and was immediately hit with questions regarding the elephant in the room. Josh Gordon.
In regards to what lead to Belichick placing his wide receiver on injured reserve and how it may have been relayed from agent to client or from just he to Gordon, the coach gave a simple answer.
“We were just following the rules,” Belichick told reporters.
When asked if he was planning to part ways with Gordon once he is healthy, Belichick did not say much other than give an update on the receiver’s health.
“Well that’s a conversation for later,” Belichick said. “He’s not healthy right now so.”
This answer may come to a surprise as there are many reports that say he ran 22 mph on the treadmill and was said that his knee was close to playing shape.
Questions immediately veered towards Belichick’s new receiver Mohamed Sanu whom the head coach gushed over to ESPN reporter Mike Reiss.
“[He is] a smart kid, he picks things up well,” Belichick said. “We will see what we can do here and the time’s it takes to accumulate first down, third down, fourth down, red zone situations. He’s made progress both days, works hard, good kid.”
Belichick continued to praise Sanu and his hard work to grasp the offense.
“He’s really in tune,” Belichick said. “He’s trying really hard to pick up things quickly and get on the same page as everybody else. Obviously there’s a long way to go but he’s working hard at it so we appreciate that.”
A slew of questions came about in regards to his now former defensive end Michael Bennett and what lead to him finally giving him away to Dallas for meager seventh-round pick.
“There was a lot of factors [that lead to the trade],” Belichick said. “Multiple considerations on this and in the end I think Mike’s a good player we brought in here to help our team and I think he did help us but in the end there are a certain amount of things we have to work with and work around and that’s what we have to do.”
When asked if Bennett requested a trade, Belichick denied this.
“Yeah, I don’t think that was a part of the conversation,” Belichick replied.
