Amid the coronavirus pandemic that has shutdown sporting events and suspended seasons all over, Chicago Bears GM Ryan Pace decided to give Windy City fans a nice little present, agreeing to terms on a three-year deal worth $21.75 million with inside linebacker Danny Trevathan. $14 million is guaranteed and he could make $24 million with incentives.

Trevathan has been one of the most vocal and influential leaders on the defense, ever since his arrival in 2016. Over the course of his four seasons with the Bears, Trevathan has racked up 327 tackles, including 15 tackles-for-loss and six sacks.
Trevathan’s play has never been an issue, but his injury history led to much speculation, whether or not the Bears would bring him back or let him walk in free agency. Trevathan was set to become a free agent as soon as next Wednesday when the market opens up.

In addition to Trevathan’s troubles with staying on the field, Nick Kwiatkoski really stepped up nicely, in his place, the last seven games of this past season. The result of this agreement creates serious questions regarding both Kwiatkoski and Leonard Floyd. Kwiat will almost certainly command upwards of $6 million AAV on the open market, and that seems to be too much for the Bears to spend on him when they clearly have other positions of need to address.

As for Floyd, the Bears could decide to make him a salary cap casualty. His fifth-year option is worth $13.2 million for 2020. Free agency begins Wednesday, March 18th and the Bears will need to decide what to do with Floyd prior to that. It will be interesting to see if the Bears let Floyd go to create more cap room and potentially look to fill the edge position vacancy in free agency or the draft. Stay tuned. With virtually zero sporting events to watch in the coming weeks, this is about all we have to look forward to.
