Baxter: Don’t Give Up on Red Sox Just Yet

Stop this roller coaster, I want off.

A few weeks ago, there was nothing but hope for this Red Sox team. It looked like they had finally hit our stride. This team, built with a ton of stars and promise, looked poised to play their best baseball in the last couple months of the season. They took two out of three from Tampa, then won three out of four against New York. Expectations hit a peak for me, and many other like-minded fans, then.

As quickly as it came, it was once again gone. They lost EIGHT games in a row, all against Tampa and the Yankees. Playoff hopes have once again diminished.

Despite the large roll over in players from last seasons Championship roster and stats that show the team is a lot better than the current record, it seems futile to hope that this team will flip a switch and stay hot and find the one thing they are missing, consistency.

Perhaps the only thing more frustrating than the Sox’ performance this year is how the front office has refused to fix the issues. The team has lacked a closer all season and now has 20 blown saves at the time of writing this. At a time when the Red Sox needed a boost and were in a decent position to make something happen, the front office let us down and declined on making any changes on trade deadline day.

But, and that’s a big but, don’t count this team out yet. This is the Boston Red Sox we are talking about here. This is the team that overcame a 3-0 deficit, a team that has gone from worst to first, a team that is stacked with talent this season. Don’t give up, not on this team. Not on the Boston Red Sox.

The remaining August schedule is promising. I don’t expect a long winning streak. That’s not really realistic with the way we have been playing. All I hope for is series wins.  With a little bit of luck from the Baseball Gods and some much needed consistent play, the Sox could find themselves right back in contention for a Wild Card spot.
