The Indianapolis Colts are usually one of the best teams in the draft each year. Chris Ballard and Ed Dodds are two of the best in the business at finding value and addressing it in the draft. Entering the draft, Indianapolis had needs at left tackle, receiver, tight end, pass-rusher, cornerback, and defensive line.
The Green Bay Packers entered the draft with needs at receiver, right tackle, center, defensive line, linebacker, and cornerback. Before the draft started on Thursday, the Packers were already in the news with the mounting issues between Aaron Rodgers, general manager, Brian Gutekunst, and the coaching staff.
After an exciting first night of the draft, night two is upon us. There are still plenty of great players left on the board, some of whom should have been selected in the first 25 picks. Day two is stacked with depth at multiple positions, and some positions could fly off the board at the start of day two.
Merry Christmas everybody! The 2021 NFL Draft starts tonight and we will finally know which players will land with what team. Twitter has been abuzz all week, and everyone is posting their final big boards and mock drafts. Tonight, all of the guesswork comes to an end and we will finally know where each player goes.
The NFL is big on players that have versatility. The safety class has a lot of players that are in this mold. One player not getting enough attention in this class is San Diego State’s Tariq Thompson. He was a four-year starter at his time at San Diego State and specialized in the Warrior position that SDSU employs. Thompson is a very versatile prospect that excels in his IQ and continuous turnover production.
The Pittsburgh defense is sending a lot of talent to the NFL this year. They had one of the best safety tandems in the league with Damar Hamlin and Paris Ford. Hamlin played in many different spots during his time there and projects to do the same in the NFL as well.
The 2021 linebacker class is deep. While many expected it to be top-heavy, there are plenty of players on days two and three that could find starting roles during their rookie seasons. That includes Boston College’s Isaiah McDuffie. McDuffie came to BC as a safety, but made the transition to the second level.
It is well known that the defensive line class in the 2021 draft isn’t great or even good. USC is providing two solid prospects in Jay Tufele and Marlon Tuipulotu. The lesser-known prospect, Tuipulotu, has a chance to be selected on the second day of the draft. With the class lacking many impact players, he could be pushed up the board more expected.
In one of the worst defensive line classes in memory, there are some names that are noticeably sticking out. One of them is Alim McNeill from NC State. McNeill was a running back and linebacker in high school before adding about 50 pounds to his frame to become a nose tackle for the Wolfpack. There are a few things that stick out immediately when watching him, and those are his power and strength.
The TCU defense is known for having one of the best, if not the best secondary in all of college football. he unsung hero on the defense is Garret Wallow. He started his career as a safety but made the transition to linebacker following his freshman season. Wallow made the most of his pro day and is now looking to make noise at the next level.
Ohio State has consistently produced starting linemen in the NFL. That doesn’t end this year as both Wyatt Davis and Josh Myers are entering the league. Myers originally started out as a guard during his time with the Buckeyes but projects best as a center at the next level. Myers will likely be the fourth center off the board next weekend.
There are plenty of occasions where college teams overlook a prospect. That seems to be the case with Cameron Sample. Tulane was the only FBS team to offer him a scholarship. Sample took it and ran with the opportunity. Sample, paired with Patrick Johnson formed a dynamic pass-rush duo for the Green Wave. The Green Wave moved him all across the defense and that versatility will be liked by the NFL.
