An Open Letter to NASCAR’s Jimmie Johnson and Clint Bowyer

An Open Letter to NASCAR’s Jimmie Johnson and Clint Bowyer

The 2020 NASCAR season ended Sunday in Phoenix and its most popular driver, Chase Elliot, won the race and the 2020 Cup series championship. Notably, Sunday’s race in Phoenix was the final race for both Jimmie Johnson and Clint Bowyer. Johnson finished fifth behind the four racing for the title, and Bowyer finished 14th.

An open letter to each Bowyer and Johnson:

Dear Clint,

You will be missed a lot. Your personality makes you a fan favorite. While you won 10 races, it would have been great to see you win even more. For fans, the good news is that you’ll still be around as you move to the FOX broadcast booth. I can’t wait to see you calling the races next year. It will be fun to watch.

Dear Jimmie,

It’s hard to believe that you have been in NASCAR for 19 years. It’s sad to see you go as you have been a class act and a great ambassador for NASCAR throughout your career.

You head into retirement as a legend as well as a future Hall of Famer. You won 83 races, two Daytona 500s, and seven championships, tied with Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt for most all-time. What was most remarkable is that you won five championships in a row from 2006 to 2010.

It’s too bad that you didn’t win a race in your final season. It’s more of a shame that you didn’t get the farewell that you deserve because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

People debate whether you’re the greatest of all time, but you are NASCAR’s GOAT. No one else has won five championships in a row and that won’t happen again. In 2009, you were named the Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year, the first and only NASCAR driver to earn the honor.

The good news for us is that you’ll still be around. It will be fun seeing you race in IndyCar and the Rolex 24 at Daytona. Maybe you could run some NASCAR races next year too.

Clint and Jimmie, on behalf of all fans, thanks for everything you’ve done.

Sincerely,

Alex Jordan
