The Miami Heat acquired Kyle Lowry last week in a sign-and-trade agreement with the Toronto Raptors. Even though they’re currently being investigated for tampering, the move is not expected to be voided. So Miami should keep its new point guard. The point guard who won’t remain is Goran Dragic, who was involved in the deal. After being traded to the Raptors, the 35-year old guard is still looking to play elsewhere. In a television interview from Slovenia, the guard states he has ‘higher ambitions’ than playing in Toronto.

Dragic is coming off a season where he averaged 13.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game for Miami. He’s entering the final year of his deal worth $19.4 million with plenty left to help a team. Dragic spent the last six and a half seasons with the Heat, earning a spot in the 2018 All-star game and providing stability at the guard position. While the guard is past his prime, he’s still an effective sixth-man off the bench. Just a year ago, he played a huge role in Miami’s NBA Finals run with his scoring and leadership.
It’s no secret that the guard prefers to play for the Dallas Mavericks. He’s very close with Dallas all-star Luka Doncic, who’s played with Dragic on the Slovenia national team. Dallas is looking for a secondary ball-handler who can relieve some of the playmaking duties off of Luka. Dallas is likely interested in the guard. The question now is whether or not the Mavericks would prefer to trade for him or wait on a buyout. Due to Dragic’s salary, it’s best to say they would prefer the latter.
Is a Buyout Coming?
However, Toronto has reportedly shown no “inclination” it wants to go through a buyout. They also reportedly rebuffed trade offers for the guard. Dragic’s message for Toronto shows he has no desire to remain in there. It would be best if the Raptors move him to at least get something back. Along with Dallas, there are teams who would love to pursue the guard like the New Orleans Pelicans. After missing out on Lowry, the Pelicans are in need of a starting guard. Unfortunately, they could be placed in a similar situation like Toronto if they made a move for him.
This is a marriage that could and should be a short one. It’s best for both parties to find a solution before the season starts. Or, it could end up being a bad situation, and that’s something you don’t want to cloud over your season. We’ll see what Toronto decides to do.
