Yankees’ Home Run Outburst Shatters Records

home runs

The New York Yankees couldn’t stop mashing the ball out of the park over the last three days.

On Thursday, the Bronx Bombers tied one Major League record while breaking another. In the fourth inning of their game against the Toronto Blue Jays, with the score tied 2-2, they hit five homers, setting a franchise record and tying an MLB record for most home runs in one inning. It started with Brett Gardner, DJ LeMahieu, and Luke Voit going back-to-back-to-back.

Voit’s home run was his league-leading 20th on the season.

Giancarlo Stanton then hit one that gave the Yankees their 17th home run over a three-game stretch, breaking the previous record held by the 2019 Yankees and 2019 Washington Nationals.

To complete the franchise record inning, Gleyber Torres went back-to-back with Stanton for their fifth of the inning and 18th in three games.

There have been six other teams to hit five homers in one inning. The Yankees became the second American League team to do so. The 1939 New York Giants, 1949 Philadelphia Phillies, 1961 San Francisco Giants, 1966 Minnesota Twins, 2006 Milwaukee Brewers, and 2017 Washington Nationals were the other teams. Four of the now-seven teams did it against the Cincinnati Reds.

Keep on Smashing

The home runs didn’t end in the fourth inning, though, as Gary Sanchez hit one in the seventh. This smashed another record as it was the Yankees’ sixth of the game, giving them the title of the first team in league history to hit six or more homers in three straight games. They mashed six on Tuesday, seven on Wednesday, and six on Thursday.

Over the three-game series against the Blue Jays, the Yankees outscored Toronto, 43-15. They are now on an eight-game winning streak and are clicking on all cylinders with 10 games left in the regular season.
