What is the Story with Jamal Adams?

Over the last few months, there have been many rumors about Jamal Adams’ future and specifically with the New York Jets. The 2017 first-rounder first made some comments during the season about his displeasure with the Jets organization. Then when defeating the Cowboys stunningly 24-22 on October 13, he said: “how bout’ them Cowboys.” For context, the Cowboys were his favorite team growing up in Lewisville, Texas.  That sparked some speculation about trade talk.  Then come the NFL trade deadline and the Jets were blindingly attempting to trade the star safety.  He was very insulted by their actions and rightfully so.  He then started taking everything Jets out of his social media profiles and was very agitated.  A few weeks went by until he addressed the media.  He stated then that he would love to be a Jet for life and hopes for a peaceful relationship with the Jets.  The damage was already done but the grass looked greener on the other side.  Fast forward to a few weeks ago and Joe Douglas in a pre-draft meeting stated that they intend to keep Jamal a Jet for life.  He said that they had preliminary talks with Adams’ representatives and that after the draft they would continue the talks.  Then this rumor came about:

Jamal Adams was the sixth overall pick in 2017 and has looked worthy to be the number one that year.  Obviously, Patrick Mahomes would go before him, but of all of the players drafted, Jamal may be the second-best.  The only other safety from that 2017 draft that has been selected to the First-Team All-Pro is Bears safety, Eddie Jackson.  They both were selected twice to the Pro Bowl in 2018 and 2019.  To say the least, Jamal Adams is a great player.

Adams has played 46 of 48 possible career games and has been looking like a generational talent.  He has 273 combined tackles, 210 total tackles, 63 assisted tackles, and 12 sacks.  He led all safeties in sacks last season with 6.5.  Adams has two career interceptions, 25 pass deflections, one pick-six, six forced fumbles, and four fumble recoveries.

He is arguably the best player the Jets have drafted in years.  What is the story with the fan-favorite in the New York spotlight?  Will he get dealt before the draft? Will he get dealt at the draft? Will he get extended? Will he stay put?

These are all possibilities but before any assumptions get made, let me point out a couple of notes.  Adams has shown more love than hate to the Jets organization.  He is an emotional player and super fun.  He has a really contagious personality and the fans absolutely love him.  He is again a once in a lifetime player and can’t be traded.

Very soon we will all know his fate but Jamal Adams getting moved would be a big mistake by the Jets.
