Bruce Ellington Headed to New England

It has been announced that wide receiver Bruce Ellington will sign with the New England Patriots, as reported by NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport. The deal is for one year. Ellington is a receiver who works best in the slot and is able to torch defenses with his catching ability and great speed.

Ellington was drafted in the fourth round by the San Francisco 49ers back in 2014. He has spent time with the Niners, Jets, Texans, and most recently, the Detroit Lions. He had 31 catches, 224 yards, and one touchdown last season as a receiver. Likely the main reason New England brought Ellington in, though, was because of his ability on special teams.

The Patriots lost a core member of their return game, Cordarrelle Patterson, to the Bears in free agency earlier this week. Patterson was mainly the kick returner for the Patriots last year, with Julian Edelman covering the punt returns. Because of Ellington’s speed and other abilities, he is a dual-threat return specialist, having experience in both kick and punt returns under his belt.
