Rafael Devers and Michael Chavis both won May Accolades. American League Player of the month and AL Rookie Player of the month for May.
Here is a quick overview of the month of May for the Boston Red Sox:
Sale won his first game of the year against the Chicago White Sox. The Floridian native is currently throwing a ERA of 4.35. Well above his career average of 2.95, according to ESPN.
The Red Sox only won 16 of their 27 games played in May, a percentage of about 59.2%.
Other players are going need to step up for the Red Sox because there has been a lack of production as of late.
For them to stay in it to try to win back-to-back a lot of things are going to have to change. Sale cannot be 1-7. Granted, the lefty has stepped up and thrown more K’s than the beginning of the season.
But the offensive production has been subpar during these performances.
Rafael Devers leads the team with a .316 average. He was on fire in May clearly earning his right as the AL player of the month. He hit .351/.380/.640 with eight home runs, 25 runs scored and 24 RBI in May.
All of Devers’ home runs have come in the May. Devers is on pace to have himself a career high season, but if the Red Sox cannot step up their production from other players in the ball club, then the Yankees and other teams in the AL are going to run them over come October.
It is still too early to tell of course, but Devers and Chavis have certainly been the brightest spark in this somewhat rusty ball club from April.
