The 2022 MXGP season hit the quarter-way mark on Sunday as the series made its second of four stops in Italy. The Trentino circuit, which is one of the world’s best tracks in terms of layout and ambiance, had a notable twist for 2022. That being that the course is now going in the opposite direction that in years past. A nice little wrinkle to spice things up, and the entire field was hoping that this would hinder points leaders Tim Gajser and Jago Geerts.

MX2 Class Recap
Moto 1
Picking up holeshot No. 4 on the year was Red Bull KTM’s Tom Vialle, who along with Mikkel Haarup, pulled away from the field in short order. Isak Gifting, who had third secured for the first half of this Moto over both Andrea Adamo and Thibault Benistant, had an innocent tip over, which lost him upwards of 5 spots in total. Someone who was moving in the opposite direction was Jago Geerts, who after a poor start, rallied up from seventh to third, only securing the final podium spot with laps to go. Despite Haarup legitimately keeping Vialle honest the entire race, the Frenchman’s initial lead was all he needed to win this one. For the No. 28 this was his second Moto win of the season.
Moto 2
Vialle pulled off a 2-for-2 holeshot day, picking up Benistant and Kay De Wolf trailing behind him in the early goings. The big story in the open fourth of this Moto was Geerts, who had a rough fall on a downhill jump section. After picking himself up, the points leader called it a day just laps later, ensuring that Vialle would leave Trentino the new MX2 points leader. Not only that, but he secured a 1-1 day to boot, going from 16 points back of Geerts, to now up 14 on the Monster Energy Yamaha rider.

MXGP Class Recap
Moto 1
Monster Energy Yamaha’s Glenn Coldenhoff pulled off his first holeshot of the year over Jorge Prado, who just ran a bit too wide in turn one. The GasGas rider then lost second to Gajser, opting to go outside in turn two, and stayed in third for the rest of the race. Coldenhoff’s lead lasted to around the midway point until Gajser got to him and passed him at the end of lap 10. That ended up being all the 243 needed for Moto win No. 5 on the year. Not a bad Moto for the Monster Yamaha squad by any stretch either, with Coldenhoff, Maxime Renaux, and Jeremy Seewer all finishing top five.
Moto 2
Prado this Moto was able to get to the inside off the start to secure his fifth holeshot of the season. Behind him, Seewer pulled off what may have been the highlight of the year. On the uphill section, he tripled the uphill jump section and spectacular fashion. For context, riders were near-universally double-doubling that section, and Seewer gained a few bike lengths. Prado then stalled his GasGas machine a few corners later, surrendering the point to Gajser and Seewer.
Seewer then himself ran into some trouble, falling at the end of lap three, giving second place to Brian Bogers. Then Bogers went on to stall just as Prado did laps earlier and lost a few spots before finishing fifth. As has been the story nearly all year, no one could hang with Gajser once he got out in front. Here he pulled off Moto win No. 6 and Grand Prix win No. 4 on the season.
