2022 Senior Bowl: Jermaine Johnson Stands Out

Florida State edge rusher Jermaine Johnson has been one of the standouts from the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama. This past season with the Seminoles, he had 70 tackles to go along with 12 sacks and two forced fumbles. The 12 sacks were the sixth-best in the country. Conference-wise, he led the ACC with 18 tackles for loss and was the ACC Defensive player of the year. No wonder he was named a first-team All-American.

Sitting out the Senior Bowl game

Media and scouts were raving about Johnson all week long in Mobile for the first two days of practice. However, on Thursday afternoon, he sat out the event and is now likely to sit out of the game as a whole. After his incredible first two days, many believe that the senior has done enough to elevate himself into a serious pick. At this point, he likely doesn’t want to jeopardize his position as a likely first-round prospect. Johnson has incredible athleticism for his current frame. With great size and length, no wonder he cemented himself as a first-round prospect.

Impresisve performance

According to reports, coaches pulled Johnson and Kentucky offensive lineman Darian Kinnard aside after the practice for three individual pass-rush reps, and that was the first one. “That was a speed to power,” Johnson told reporters afterward. “I got his hips turned, and I put his ass on the ground.” The reps were so impressive that it was all over social media.

Former Bulldog

Before transferring to Florida State University, the Eden Prairie, Minnesota native was a former Georgia Bulldog. He played with the Bulldogs in 2019 and 2020 before finishing with the Seminoles and is having a great time being back with his old Georgia teammates. “All of our faces lit up when we saw each other,” Johnson said at the Senior Bowl Media Day on Wednesday at the Mobile Convention Center. Johnson also noted that he’s currently sharing a room with former teammate Channing Tindall. “I’m rooming with Channing Tindall right now, and we’re having a blast, it’s like we’re back at Georgia practicing outside and on the turf,” Johnson said.
