The One Message Trevor Lawrence is Secretly Telling the New York Jets

Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence has left the door open to returning to school for his senior year, and he is secretly hinting for the New York Jets to do one thing.

The Jets stink. That isn’t news to any casual sports fan in America. They stink so bad that the consensus number one pick in the NFL draft may stay in school if the Jets finish with the worst record. Lawrence has said in the past that this year will be his last season at Clemson, but he changed his tone in a Zoom session with reporters.

“Obviously, I have the option to do either one. Kind of my mindset has been that I am going to move on,” Lawrence said on Tuesday. “But who knows? There’s a lot of things that could happen.’’

What exactly are those “things that could happen” that would keep him at Clemson? Only one thing comes to mind.

If the Jets receive the number one pick and Adam Gase is still the head coach

It’s quite simple. Lawrence is noticing the same thing as the rest of us are; the Jets are where young quarterbacks go to die, and the primary reason why they haven’t succeeded is their head coach. Gase was proclaimed an offensive genius earlier this season by owner Christopher Johnson, but it has yet to show up on the field since beginning his tenure as the Jets head coach. The offensive genius gave up the play-calling before their 18-10 loss last week vs. the Buffalo Bills. Some would he should’ve given up duties weeks ago. That’s how bad it has been.

Gase could ruin the Jets’ future. And of course, the future is Lawrence. If somehow, Gase is still the head coach of the Jets after this season, then Lawrence is staying at Clemson. Lawrence isn’t dumb. He has seen how Gase has turned Sam Darnold, who was a top quarterback prospect ahead of the 2018 draft, into a below-average quarterback. Why would he want to go there with Gase still in the building? When Lawrence brought up the option of him staying at Clemson for his senior year, he was doing that to send a clear message to the Jets: get rid of Gase or else I’m not playing for you.
