7&7: Week of May 28th

John Supowitz | June 4th, 2019

You know the rules: Seven best hitters of the week

Trevor Story SS Rockies

As I first reported last week, the Rockies are hot. The team is soaring a mile (high) a minute as they ride an eight-game winning streak and now sit half of a game out of the second wild card. Trevor Story‘s numbers are worth reading; he led the league this week in AVG (.524), OBP (.583), SLG (1.048), OPS (1.631), BABIP (.643) as he earned National League Player of The Week honors. A .270 AVG a week ago, he’s now hitting .293. His 50.3 hard hit percentage is in the top seven this season.

Xander Bogaerts SS Red Sox

Although the pitching still has been a sore spot for Boston, the hitting has improved significantly. Their big bats, including, J.D. Martinez, Mookie Betts, and Xander Bogarts have started to come along. Bogarts began May batting .264 and ended at .305. His WOBA is .399, which is top eight in the league. Bogarts was the only player this past week to reach double digits in runs (10), go along with a .462 AVG and .962 SLG.

Austin Meadows OF Rays

I wonder how the Pirates are feeling now after they sent Meadows to Tampa in the Chris Archer. He currently holds a 19 point lead in the AL batting title, he’s also at the top the league in WOBA, top four in XBA and top seven XWOBA. Although his .419 was only 11th this week, he was the only player to reach double-digit RBI (10).

Derek Dietrich 2B Reds

Dietrich has garnered quite a bit of attention the last couple of weeks because of his controversial approach after hitting bombs, could be because this is something brand new to him. After six previous seasons in Miami, 56 games in his first season in Cincinnati; he has exceeded his personal best in home runs with 17, and just 16 RBI shy of the same. His three home run game, in addition to one the night before, gives him the league lead this week.

Mike Trout OF Angels

I haven’t called the name of the best player in baseball this year, not because he doesn’t deserve it, he’s been overall consistent this year. He leads the lead in barrel percentage (18.9), WOBA (.443), XWOBA (.473), second in XBA (.324) and XSLG (.643). He also leads the league in walk percentage with 22, and he continued as this week’s leader with 27.6.

Bryce Harper OF Phillies

Another great player we haven’t talked about this year is Harper, and that’s because he hasn’t been playing well. He’s been under a microscope because of the massive contract, but has underwhelmed; he’s currently batting just .248, but that number jumped 21 points this week as he hit .417 and tied for second in RBI with nine.

David Dahl OF Rockies

I tried not to put multiple players from the same team, but with Colorado, being the best team this week, and their offense has significantly improved also, I don’t mind making Dahl my fourth Rockie in the last three weeks. Dahl was third in AVG this week with .464 and sixth in BABIP with .524.
