3 Burning Questions: New York Jets

It’s that time of year again. Here are three burning questions for the New York Jets.

What will Darnold’s third season look like?

When he isn’t seeing ghosts or sidelined due to mononucleosis, Sam Darnold has shown he can survive the ups and downs of being a quarterback in New York, which may be the toughest place to play.

The No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft was selected behind Baker Mayfield and Saquon Barkley. He threw for just over 3,000 yards and 19 touchdowns last season but also tossed 13 interceptions.

Darnold’s favorite target was playmaker Robby Anderson, but he is now in Carolina. Breshad Perriman, Jamison Crowder, Josh Doctson, and second-round pick Denzel Mims make up the top Jets targets this season.

Perhaps the biggest plus for the third-year quarterback is the signing of former Ravens and Broncos quarterback Joe Flacco, who will serve as the backup and aid in Darnold’s development. Flacco has shown success in his career and knows what it takes to be a winner; he has thrown for over 40,000 yards and also has a Super Bowl ring.

A future Hall of Famer as part of their rushing attack?

Frank Gore joined the Jets in the offseason. The 15-year veteran has tallied over 15,000 career rushing yards and sits third on the all-time list behind only Emmitt Smith and Walter Payton.

Gore joins Le’Veon Bell in the Jets’ backfield. The three-time Pro Bowl selection joined the Jets last offseason after sitting out the prior season due to a contract dispute with the Steelers.

Bell’s first season in New York ended with just shy of 800 yards rushing and three touchdowns. This season will be the test for Bell to see if he can chalk last season up to being in a new system or if the year off truly derailed his career.

Is Adam Gase sitting on the hottest hot seat in the NFL?

Head coach Adam Gase’s first season in New York went pretty much the same as his prior two in Miami as the Jets finished 7-9. Gase’s career coaching record stands at 30-34 with a third of those wins coming in his first season as Miami’s head coach. If this team fails to win games, the rumblings in the Big Apple will begin to get louder. If that’s the case, he may not be the team’s head man by the end of the season.
