3 Burning Questions: Kansas City Chiefs

It’s that time of year again. Here are three burning questions for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Can the Chiefs avoid the Super Bowl hangover and the target that comes with being the defending champs?

Aside from some minor tinkering with the offensive line, this team offensively is pretty much the same team from a season ago. Everyone saw how that worked out for them.

The other 31 teams—especially the three in their division—made many of their personnel decisions this offseason with slowing down the Chiefs a top priority.

With the weapons Patrick Mahomes has at his disposal, if any team can avoid a Super Bowl hangover, it’s this team. But…

Is the running game enough or will it be a liability?

If there can be such a thing as a weakness for a Super Bowl-winning team, Kansas City’s was the running game. Darrel Williams and Spencer Ware ended up on injured reserve with a hamstring and shoulder injury, respectively. LeSean McCoy‘s reunion with Andy Reid wasn’t very successful, either.

In the last few regular season games and the playoffs, Damien Williams was tasked with running the ball. He totaled six touchdowns in the postseason while tallying seven during the regular season.

This season, Williams will split carries with LSU running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire. If the pair can stay healthy, they can form a solid two-headed monster out of the backfield.

Will the defense be able to replicate last season?

Last season, the Chiefs defense played great team defense. Chris Jones, Frank Clark, and the rest of the front seven had tons of success against opposing defenses. A healthy Alex Okafor for the whole season will further solidify this group.

The secondary was led by Tyrann Mathieu and Bashaud Breeland, who held their own against the league’s best receivers and tight ends. There’s no reason to think that they won’t be able to perform at the same level this season.

Although they addressed depth on both sides of the ball, Andy Reid and the Chiefs know that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
