It’s that time of year again. It’s time for the three burning questions series. Last season this series was divided up into the eight NFL divisions. This season each team will be spotlighted individually. Here are three burning questions for the Buffalo Bills.
Can Singletary be as effective when he’s “the guy”?
The rookie running back last season had the fortune to share the backfield with a future Hall of Fame running back in Frank Gore. He will look to build on that tutelage heading into his second season. The team was confident enough in his ability that they essentially made him “the guy”. T.J. Yeldon will spell Singletary and will in all likelihood be the third-down back. Singletary tallied 775 yards on the ground and a pair of touchdowns on the ground and two more receiving. But can he be a feature, bell-cow back?
Will this team and Josh Allen take the next step?
This team last season was nipping at the New England Patriots’ heels from beginning to end, just falling short of catching them and stealing the AFC East. The team acquired Stefon Diggs in a trade with the Vikings. A veteran, No. 1 receiver doesn’t fall into a developing young quarterback’s lap every day.
Josh Allen led his team to the playoffs without the benefit of a true number one receiver last season, but most people point towards the defense as the main reason for Buffalo’s success. It should be even more exciting to see what he’s able to do, now that he has Diggs. Diggs should help Allen eclipse his 2019 totals of 3,000 passing yards and 20 passing touchdowns as the Bills look to take the next step.
Will the defense be able to duplicate last season’s success?
The defense in Buffalo surprised just about everyone who lives outside of western New York. Week in and week out, if they didn’t dominate the game, they seemed to make critical stops at the crucial parts of games, giving Allen and the offense more opportunities to cash in.
They added veteran linebacker A.J. Klein and defensive end Mario Addison, which will add a boost to the pass rush. The secondary of Josh Norman, Micah Hyde, Jordan Poyer, and Tre’Davious White can match up well with the best receiving corps in the league.
With a likely Ed Oliver suspension looming for his arrest, it will remain to be seen if Sean McDermott’s unit can continue to be a top-five defense in 2020.
