2021 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Dylan Moses

Dylan Moses has been on the NFL’s radar since he received scholarships from LSU and Alabama in eighth grade. Once thought of as the next great linebacker, Moses was earning early-first round hype before he tore his ACL during a practice before the 2019 season and opted to return to Alabama for his senior season. This year has been a bit of a struggle for Moses as he switched to the MIKE linebacker role for the Crimson Tide. He has since gone from being potentially the best linebacker in the class to potentially the fourth or fifth-best.

Tackling (9.25/10)

Moses is one of the best tacklers at the linebacker spot this draft cycle. He does a great job at wrapping up and grabbing the ball carrier and bringing him to the ground. There weren’t many missed tackles from Moses at Alabama.

Sideline-to-Sideline Ability (8.5/10)

With his superior athletic profile, Moses fits well as a strong or weak-side linebacker. Being tasked with playing in the middle of the defense this season, he hasn’t been able to have the best season.

Awareness (9/10)

Moses is always a second away from making a play. He knows where the ball is going to go and is always around the ball-carrier.

Versatility (9/10)

Moses played as the weak and strong-side linebacker spots, the middle linebacker, and on the edge at Alabama. His athletic profile and ability to play in a variety of roles will be coveted in the NFL.

Decision-Making (7.25/10)

He is a bit of a liability on play-action plays. He can key-in on the quarterback too much, allowing for a wide-open gap in the middle of the field for the running back. Other times, it’s the opposite, and it allows for the quarterback to shred the defense.

Block Shedding (6.75/10)

Easy to get ahold of. Once he’s in the lineman’s grasp, it’s difficult for him to get away from them. If he’s double-teamed, the opposing team earns a huge chunk of yardage.

Short-Area Quickness (8.5/10)

Really big hitter. Can make up space in a hurry and make up for the ground he loses earlier in the play.

Coverage (8.25/10)

Moses is solid in coverage. There are a few occasions where he gets grabby, resulting in pass interference calls. He also tends to look back when he’s in coverage as he’s lost his receiver.

Football IQ (10/10)

Moses will sometimes overthink a play he knows that much. Playing in a Nick Saban-led scheme as the MIKE linebacker shows how much trust Saban has in him.

Competitive Toughness (4.5/5)

There were some times where Moses would give up on a play. He’d see the play wasn’t within his range. and slow up and then the ball-carrier would turn back to him, and Moses wouldn’t be there to make the play.

Injury (3.5/5)

Moses suffered a torn ACL during a practice before the 2019 season.

Player Summary

Moses is in the conversation as a first-round prospect. Being tasked with playing as the MIKE linebacker for the Crimson Tide has brought along some challenges for him. Whichever team elects to select him will have to have a conversation about switching him back to strong or weak-side linebacker if they have another option for the MIKE role. Teams at the back-end of the first round, such as Green Bay and Kansas City that need a linebacker, would be wise to consider Moses.

Final Grade (82.75/100): Late-Second Round
